As many of you know, I spent years in the Marines working my body extremely hard and continued to do so for years after my time in the Corps. Now as I am moving into the Wise Woman stage of my life, I notice some "things" about my body. I notice that the extreme activities of keeping up with the average male Marine while packing a pack on my back weighing more than half my body weight for a living, may actually be showing some effects. That extremely rigid lifestyle seems to have prefaced some rigidness in my body. I am talking about my tight tush! Otherwise known as piriformis syndrome or restricted glutes or restricted hamstring muscles. This is a restriction that is painful at times and is a constant nagging ache.

As a physician, I get a lot of pain patients, mostly concerned about low back pain. Arthritis pain and fibromyalgia pains are other complaints people come to me to help relieve or reduce their pain. Typical treatments include trigger point injections with homeopathic meds, acupuncture, some natural anti-inflamatories and some movement counseling. Those are some of the therapies I do on my clients which are effective and long lasting. However, one of the greatest therapies I prescribe is bodywork combined with movement. I am not a bodyworker - I don't do massage therapy but I prescribe it often for my clients and myself. Recently, Skye helped me in a different way to relieve my tight tush that goes beyond massage therapy.

It is a type of stretch therapy that releases the adhesions or rigidness of the tendons and ligaments and that all important fascia. Fascia is an extremely complicated thin rubber-band like substance in our body that holds everything together. Its all over the place in our body. When it is too rigid, then we don't have flexibility like we would like and it restricts us. Who really wants to be restricted? Stretching the fascia pulls fluid into the area and releases the toxins that store within forming crystals which cause pain like fibromyalgia or arthritis. Additionally this stretch technique reminds our joints that they can be flexible and don't have to move in the same ways over and over again causing wear and tear on the joints. The results are extremely therapeutic and can be felt immediately. I suggest you try it!
