Do you know your numbers? Numbers to know for heart health
There are several numbers you should know about for your heart health. Most people are aware they should have an idea of what their blood pressure is and a general idea of what their cholesterol levels read. These are numbers that can be easily measured at Luna Fitness. The cholesterol check is a simple blood test and of course, the blood pressure check only takes a few minutes!
Did you know that there are more measures of cholesterol that are reported to be better indicators of risk for strokes or heart attacks? Triglycerides, total cholesterol, LDL's and HDL's are typically measured with your yearly exam at your primary care physician. However, most medical doctors don't know about the fractionated lipoproteins blood test. This test examines not just your cholesterol numbers, but looks the TYPE of LDL in your blood. One test is the remnant lipoprotein and the Lipo(a) cholesterol type. These types, if high in your system, have a greater tendency to form clots and cholesterol plaques in your blood vessels. If you doctor has not run these tests on you, you may be at a greater risk for heart disease than you may know. A great thing about these tests is that most of the insurance companies pay for this test - often with only a small copay or no copay at all. Set your consult with me to get more information on this simple blood test and learn how to prevent heart disease!
