Digging Deeper.... What are your choices fulfilling?

As a life coach I consistently have clients coming to me wanting to know the answers to some of life’s biggest questions. My job isn’t to give you any answers, but provide you with the guidance and assistance to finding them for yourself. We all have the answers within, it’s only a matter of being willing to dig deep enough to get them.

Lately, I have been hearing a lot of this one. Why do I keep doing things (mostly I hear about over eating and bad diet choices) that result in sabotaging my success? Does this sound like you? Then keep reading to dig a little deeper. I recommend having a notebook handy and journaling what you discover.

My first question to you would be, what is being fulfilled by making this choice? Initially, the answer I hear is, “I don’t know”. No matter what you are doing there is some need or want that is being fulfilled. You may want to sit with this question for a bit. Close your eyes and take some deep breathes. Ask yourself, “What is this choice fulfilling for me?”

Still not sure. That’s okay… lets dig a little deeper.

Reflect back to when you were diving into that bag of Doritos with extra nacho cheese (or whatever your “fix” happens to be). What were you thinking about? Where you recapping your stressful day at work? Were you thinking about how your new hair cut went unnoticed by your significant other? How did those thoughts make you feel? Were you feeling anxious? Unloved? Angry? Happy? Tired and drained? You don’t need to justify your story at this point, just become aware of your trigger and the feeling. Journal your thoughts.

Now lets dig a little bit deeper.

What is it you have been seeking to fulfill but haven’t been willing to give to yourself? Remember food and self sabotaging choices will only give you short term fulfillment. While in the end, what you’ve been longing for is still yearning to be satisfied. Once you have identified what this is for you its time to start honoring yourself and fulfill your needs in a new healthy way.
