Bleeding gums? Bad Breath? Not just an issue for your dentist!
I have this friend that is a dentist. Recently he spoke to a group that we are both members of and spoke about periodontal disease and all the many health issues that are associated with this problem. Of course, prevention is the way to keep periodontal disease from occurring, which we all know. What was interesting is that in the dental field, periodontal disease CAUSES or is LINKED to chronic disease such as colitis, heart disease, diabetes, joint replacements, arthritis, high cholesterol level and a whole bunch more. However in my world, the world of natural medicine, the periodontal disease is a result of chronic inflammation. Just like cholesterol is a symptom of chronic inflammation, so is periodontal disease. So, although it is important to brush and floss your teeth daily, get regular hygiene checks/cleanings from your family dentist, and limit your sugar intake, it is probably MORE IMPORTANT to get rid of the chronic inflammation that LEADS to periodontal disease - especially bleeding gums.
During a full intake session with me, one of the most common questions I ask my clients is when is the last time they saw their dentist. It is important to have good oral health but let's also examine how we can keep our mouths healthy so we can have a beautiful smile and avoid cavities, plaque buildup and worse! - Bad breath! If these things are happening to you, a full consult with me is in order. It is important to go through the entire health history, especially eating patterns and food choices to understand which foods cause higher levels of inflammation which leads to periodontal disease and high cholesterol. Bad breath is often associated with poor digestion, poor assimilation of vitamins, or smoking/drinking. Oftentimes I will have clients or hear of people who have been fighting periodontal disease for years or fighting embarrassing bad breath. That would be the perfect time for them to come in for a consult so we can figure out the obstacle to cure. Most people don't relate their oral health with the rest of their body - thinking in the line of isolating parts of the body rather than in a holistic thought pattern. So.....If you are getting a cavity a year or more, have bleeding gums or high cholesterol, let's work together to get to the bottom on the problem and actually resolve the issue rather than spending thousands of dollars, a mountain of pain and worry, and hours and hours of your time in the dentist chair.
