"You are nothing without your health" We hear that phrase all the time. Health and wellness is a very personal topic. Everyone has belief systems revolving around their own personal health. These beleif systems are internalized and can manifest as reality. Avoiding self talk that produces images of a state of illness is a damaging practice. When you wake in the morning and get ready for the day - is Old Hagatha staring at you in the mirror? or are you satisfied with yourself? If not, what are you willing to do about it?

Of course we are exposed to more sun here in Arizona during the summer. Who can't resist getting in the pool and having backyard barbeques!. Here are some tips to keep your skin looking healthy and avoid long term damage from the skin.
Do: Use sunblock/sunscreen. Natural sunscreens contain micronized titanium dioxide and zinc oxide and can provide up to 30spf coverage. Some of the chemically based sunscreens now are reporting 75spf against some UV light rays which are the damaging light rays.

Recently there has been a resurgence of a weight loss protocol called HCG. There have been so many accounts of great weight loss. Lose a Pound a Day! Never feel hungry! Feel Great, Lose Weight! How much of this is really true? How much is really hype? As a doctor working with HCG since 2005, I have heard all these stories and more. In my practice, my first experiences with HCG involved several male patients working to lose weight for body sculpting and didn't want to use steroids. Men and losing weight.....well you know how that goes!

With the abundance of rain that we have been blessed with the early part of the year, the flowers and trees are doing their best to reproduce and have sent a shower of pollens out into the air. That, combined with so much movement in our Valley of the Sun, has increased polutants in the air and in our bodies. Seasonal Allergies have been a bit more difficult to deal with this year. What are some of the things we can do to prevent or bring down our bodies reactions to allergens? Tons of things!

Many people know about the infrared body wrap for slimming down a couple of dress sizes, but not everyone knows about the infrared body wrap for pain management. Oftentimes our muscles becomes sore and tired and contract to try to ease discomfort. This tightness results in chronic aching and sometimes numbness or a burning sensation. One usual position is the rhomboids - the muscles between your shoulder blades. When I am doing acupuncture for back pain and soreness in this area, I use an infrared lamp, called diathermy. This is similar to the body wrap except I target a specific area.

As many of you know, I spent years in the Marines working my body extremely hard and continued to do so for years after my time in the Corps. Now as I am moving into the Wise Woman stage of my life, I notice some "things" about my body. I notice that the extreme activities of keeping up with the average male Marine while packing a pack on my back weighing more than half my body weight for a living, may actually be showing some effects. That extremely rigid lifestyle seems to have prefaced some rigidness in my body. I am talking about my tight tush!

How many of you know this woman? She is sitting in a room full of people, all dressed warmly, and she is peeling off her sweater and fanning herself because she is having a hot flash! Or the woman who is considering a hysterectomy because her menses is out of control. What about the woman in the shoe - with so many children she doesn't know what to do - except cry! All of these women could be suffering from the same thing - hormone imbalance.

The winner of the crappy quote award - "I work out five days a week, eat a thousand calorie a day whole-food-organic diet, and all it does is slow down how fast I gain weight." - How many times have you heard something like that or worse - said it yourself? Obviously a woman who is fighting her hormones! At least obvious to me. Sometimes we do all that we can and do everything we are told to do by people around us, magazines, and commercials but still can't lose the weight.
