Holiday Season

This is probably the hardest time of the year for me. I love sweets. Between the pumpkin and apple pies of Thanksgiving, and the plethora of baked goods around me all of December, I find it a challenge to maintain a healthy diet.

Why Should I Receive Consistent Massage?

Massage isn't just about relaxation. It can be helpful with such chronic conditions as low back pain, arthritis, bursitis, high blood pressure, and a musculoskeletal injuries to knees, shoulders, elbows, even feet and hands. As the full-time Massage Therapist here at Luna Fitness, I am available to work with you to alleviate these and other ailments in one hour sessions. AND you can use your training sessions to receive massages if you choose.

Raw Hazelnut Brownies

In an effort to curb my out of control sweet tooth without eating highly processed and nutrient devoid calories, I discovered an amazing new brownie recipe. Although this is not a low calorie or low fat dessert, each serving provides a substantial amount of omega 3s, fiber, antioxidants, and vitamin E. You can find the original recipe on the link at the bottom of this entry. My adapted version is below:

1 cup walnuts
1/2 cups raw cacao
Pinch of sea salt
1 1/4 cups Medjool dates, pitted
1/2 cup unsalted hazelnuts, roughly chopped

November Group Fitness Updates

Have you seen the November class schedule yet? Many of the classes have remained the same, but I want to highlight a couple of awesome additions to the group fitness schedule.

Thursday 6am- Pilates and Stretch with our resident Pilates expert, Emily.

Thursday 6:30pm- Kickbox and Conditioning with the infamous Jen V. If you have yet to take one of Jen's classes, please do ASAP...but come prepared to work hard.

Also, a couple of the Zumba classes have new instructors.

Sugar...Reasons to Pass on Dessert

There are many reasons to avoid eating foods that contain a high amount of added sugar. The first one that comes to most of our minds is usually weight gain, but they are many other reasons to cut back (or cut out!) added sugar in your diet.

1. Sugar is addictive. When trying to lose weight, the last thing I need is an addiction to something that will make me gain weight. More importantly, being addicted to sugar can cause moodiness, depression, and other typical withdrawal symptoms when you do not eat it.

Spin Your Way Slim!

Although Spin, or stationary cycling classes, may not be the newest fitness craze- I believe it may be one of the best. Spin participants often burn 500-1,000 calories per hour long spin class. Additionally, each class member can go at their own pace, even when prompted by the instructor to speed up or slow down.

Pilates

Continuing my quest of helping everyone find a new group fitness class, I want to take a minute to describe some of the benefits of Pilates.

1. Pilates can be beneficial to women at any fitness level.

2. It helps gain core strength, which is a weakness for many of us!

3. It creates long lean muscles instead of short bulky muscles.

4. Pilates focuses on breath patterns, which can benefit overall health.

5. It can improve your flexibility.

Try a New Group Fitness Class

Many women are apprehensive about trying a new group fitness class. While this is completely understandable, limiting yourself to your current routine can limit your success. I want to challenge each of you to try a new class. Unsure what class to choose? Over the next few weeks I will write about the benefits of different class formats we offer. You may even find a new favorite class!
